Heavily drawing on textile fabrics bathed in the muted colour of orange, beige and magenta, ace fashion designer Agnimitra Paul will now unveil her new fusion fashion range for the Gen Y of Hills to carve a niche in the immensely popular fashion industry.
The costume designer for Prosenjit and Sri Devi, a known name in Tollywood's different genres of films, will introduce new additions to her ethnic-western fusion brand in sync with the trend among the fashion fastidious youth of north east.
Initiated by Triagon, a bunch of fashion institute products, the Agnimita show, having Tollywood heroine as show-stopper, sought to amalgamate the western tunics with lehenga choli and orange spaghetti straps, "As I believe in not going overboard in fashion. Mixing and matching modernity with traditions," Agnimitra said.
"While from Madhubani to Ikkat, I have always drawn on textile-based fabrics reflecting 'Bharatiya parampara in modern milieu', here we will largely fall back on the western cuts catering to the west-tilted youth 'audience' in Darjeeling and Dooars," the Rajpal Yadav costume designer in Anta Atter Bongaon Local, said.
"It is a big initiative and we are positive about the outcome beforehand as we can't depart from the core areas - for me working on traditional men's wear which are indigenous - from 'dhakkaparer dhuti' to sherwani and galabandh. I am showcasing my long sleeve Punjabi, made of silk, with motifs from the 30's Kolkata."
"Palanquin, horse drawn carriage and gothic mansions - aimed to initiate the sizeable non-Bengali audience in the Hills and foothills," celebrated men's wear designer Sharbari Dutta said.
In a throwback to the yesteryear, of silent era films and bioscope, of the 50s and 60s afterwards, stars like Meena Kumari, Madhubala sashayed the ramp in the show by young fashion-entrepreneur Arnab Sengupta.
Draping the most popular city model Madhabilata with glass embroidered saree and heavy jewellery, Arnab said, "This was my first ever show to have been organized in the Hills. We ought to branch out to places like Gangtok and Guwahati.
"If my model Madhablilata's traditional look and robes are liked by the Bengali audience, the same is imperative for other people.
