He asked the citizens to make the State free of AIDS in the coming years just as "we have made India free of polio".
Shetty urged all those involved in the task of preventing HIV in Maharashtra to work towards the common goal of making the State and also the country free of AIDS.

The State was proud of achieving several milestones on the healthcare front and the Government would ensure the goal of AIDS-free society was also achieved, the Minister said.
The incidences of AIDS/HIV have come down drastically today as compared to the 1980s. This was possible due to the efforts of "genuine community leaders and NGOs, who have been working tirelessly," Shetty said.
