Two days after a senior Haryana IAS officer was sent on leave following charges of sexual assault, Chandigarh Police has formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the allegations levelled against him by a Panchkula-based woman.
Formed on the directions of the Chandigarh IG R P Upadhyaya, the SIT will be headed by woman IPS officer, SP (Headquarters) Urvija Goel with members including Assistant SP (East) G S Sidhu and Station House Officer of Sector 19 police station Maninder Singh, under whose area of jurisdiction the woman had claimed she was exploited by the IAS officer.
"The SIT has been asked to conduct a speedy probe, though no deadline has been fixed," Maninder Singh said today.
While a complaint against the IAS officer, S N Roy, has been filed by the woman, a counter-complaint has also been lodged by him, he said.
The Chandigarh Police has also received a case file from the Haryana Police. The SIT will conduct the probe and act accordingly, he said.
The the 1987-batch officer has been accused of sexually exploiting the Panchkula-based woman on the pretext of marrying her, after which the Haryana government had on April 14 asked him to proceed on leave.
Roy's lawyer, however, had denied the charges alleging the complainant was only trying to "blackmail" his client and extract huge sums of money from him.
The woman had claimed she was not in the knowledge that the officer was already married as she never met his family.
She said on Tuesday that she brought the matter to the notice of state police chief. On her request, Haryana DGP Yashpal Singhal had referred the case to the Inspector General of Police, Chandigarh, where the alleged incident took place.
