Andre Borschberg, 61, is the celebrated pilot of the single-person solar-powered plane that recently completed a transcontinental trip across the United States.
He was on a training flight when his Robinson R44 Ravel helicopter crashed on the Brenay glacier in southwestern Switzerland on Sunday afternoon, a Solar Impulse spokeswoman told the ATS news agency.
The Swiss air force were alerted to the accident at around 2230 IST and after searching the area for an hour had located the pilot near the damaged helicopter, at an altitude of 3,500 metres, ATS reported.
