Acting on the Supreme Court directives, the Punjab government today said it has designated superintendent of police rank officers as nodal officers to take measures to prevent incidents of mob violence and lynching, an official spokesperson said.

The spokesperson of the Home Department said that the Supreme Court in its judgment on July 17 this year laid down guidelines for undertaking preventive, remedial and punitive measures in incidents of mob violence and lynching.

He said that SP rank officers have been designated in compliance with the guidelines passed by the Supreme Court.

The spokesperson said measures have also been taken to identify district, sub-division and villages where instances of mob violence and lynching were reported in the recent past and directions have been issued to all concerned to ensure that officer incharge of the police station of the identified areas remain extra cautious if any such instance comes to their notice.

The police was being sensitised to respond to such situations to eradicate hostile environment against any such caste or community, which may be targeted in such incidents, he said.
