A leader of the youth wing of the Samajwadi Party was allegedly shot at and injured while he was sitting in his office at Paanwali Kothi complex here, police said.
Shahzad Ahmad Barni is a former president of the Aligarh Muslim University Students' Union (AMUSU) and presently the state secretary of the Samajwadi Yuvjan Sabha, they said.
Barni told the police that yesterday a masked man entered his office and fired several rounds from his pistol, two of which pierced his body.
"The masked intruder slipped away before onlookers could grab him. Barni was rushed to the Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College Hospital where doctors discovered a bullet in his thigh and another in his forearm," a police official said.
Station Officer, Civil Lines police station, Javed Khan told PTI that according to preliminary investigations, the matter appears to be linked to the ongoing elections of the AMU Students' Union that are scheduled to be held on December 5.
Khan said that the complaint filed by Barni does not name any accused as the assailant was wearing a mask.
