Speaker should omit obituary references to KPS Gill: SAD

The Opposition Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) today said Punjab Assembly Speaker should delete the name of former state DGP K P S Gill, who died recently, from the obituary references when the House meets here tomorrow for the budget session.
The SAD core committee decided to approach the Speaker and the chief minister not make obituary references to Gill in the House tomorrow, a senior party leader said.
The decision in this regard was taken in the SAD's core committee meeting, presided over by party patron Parkash Singh Badal, besides SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal, SAD MP Prem Singh Chandumajra said.

"It was decided that the SAD legislature party leader will write to the Speaker and the chief minister in this regard. It resolved to ask the Speaker to delete Gill's name from the obituary references. The chief minister would be requested to revise the list by omitting the name of the former DGP," a statement from the party said.
In the meeting, Sukhbir noted that "Gill had indulged in alleged numerous human rights violations during his tenure as the Director General of Police of Punjab".
Hundreds of Sikh youths had gone missing and allegedly been murdered in fake encounters Gill was the state Police chief, Sukhbir was quoted as saying in the release.

He said in the light of other evidences as well about the "role of Gill in Punjab it would not be appropriate to include his name in the obituary references tomorrow."

Gill, who earned the sobriquet of 'supercop' for helping curb terrorism in Punjab in the 1980s with an iron hand, passed away in Delhi recently.
Meanwhile, the SAD core committee also passed a resolution demanding immediate implementation of a complete loan waiver for farmers and labourers.
The SAD said Congress government seemed to be getting ready to go back on its promise of a complete waiver of institutional loans of national banks and cooperative banks and non-institutional loans of commission agents.

"If the government does not heed to this demand we will launch a people's movement to get it accepted," the resolution said.
Apart from it, the committee also resolved that a party delegation would call upon Union Finance minister Arun Jaitely and demand rationalisation of GST on products linked with farmers.
Sukhbir said the delegation would demand a reduction in GST on fertilisers, pesticides, textiles, processed food and vegetable juices.
