The Delhi Government will set up new courts and appoint new judges to ensure that cases of crime against women are disposed of within six months besides setting up special security cells for their protection.
In his address to the Delhi Assembly, Lt Governor Najeeb Jung said, "A matter of deep concern is the security of women and girls. That 50 per cent of the population should be intimidated enough to avoid public spaces is a shame."
"Special security cells shall be set up to ensure that women and girls are not harassed. New courts shall be set up and new judges appointed so as to ensure that all cases involving harassment of women or girls are disposed of in three months.
"Similarly, such number of courts shall be set up and judges appointed so that all other cases are disposed of in six months," he said.
Setting up of Special Security Cells was promised by AAP during their campaign for the Assembly polls.
Security of women in the national capital has been under spotlight since the infamous December 16 gang-rape incident of 2012 after which several remedial steps were taken by the police and the government.
In one such step, the Delhi Police had recently announced that charge sheets in rape cases will be filed within 20 days to ensure speedy justice to victims.
2013 saw molestation and rape cases rising alarmingly by 412 and 129 per cent respectively.
According to police, 1559 cases of rape were registered in 2013 against 680 in 2012, a rise of 129.26 per cent. As many as 3347 cases of molestation were also reported in the past year as against 653 the previous year, which is a rise of 412.56 per cent.
