Maharashtra BJP leader Shaina NC has expressed concern over sexual exploitation of children and demanded strict action against buyers of child sex.
She said it is sad the real perpetrators of such crimes are called "customers" and let off without any proper action against them.
Shaina has started an online petition at "Change.org" demanding arrest of child sex buyers "under the strictest of laws".
During police raids on brothels, sex workers and brothel managers are arrested while customers, the primary reason for creating the demand for children to be trafficked for flesh trade, are let off with just a warning, she said.
Such child sex offenders should be booked under POSCO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) Act, she said.
The fashion designer-turned-politician said creation of an 'Anti-Child Predator Squad' can be considered at the institutional level to curb the menace.
Shaina's petition, 'Direct State Police to Arrest Men Who Sexually Exploit Children #AntiChildPredatorSquad', has demanded that the chief minister direct the police to make it their mandate to arrest "child predators".
Saina was speaking at the Press Club here yesterday.
On the occasion, a group of survivors, who was trafficked and pushed into flesh trade as minors, narrated their ordeal.
A 20-year-old woman narrated how, as a 12-year-old, she was sold and pushed into flesh trade.
The woman, hailing from Amravati who lost her parents when she was a child, said she felt fortunate to have been rescued and thanked a Vidisha-based NGO, Jansahas, for helping her in rehabilitation.
