Workers of banks, insurance companies, hydropower projects, industrial (workers) and BSNL employees the observed strike.
Anganwadi and mid-day meal workers also joined the strike and colleges remained closed in Shimla on Student Federation of India's (SFI) call of 'Education Bandh'.
Essential services like hotels and restaurants, where CPM (I) affiliated Lal Jhanda Union are in place also remained closed while the employees of HRTC, Electricity Board and other such organisation held rallies.
Some schools had declared holiday in view of strike call and strikers tried to stop private buses and taxies, plying on the roads, ignoring the strike call.
Police force was posted in strength at sensitive places but no untoward incident was reported and strike passed off peacefully.
The CITU leaders claimed that the strike was a big success and normal life was affected in the state.
