Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) today lambasted the ruling Congress government in Punjab accusing it of making "false promises" during election campaigns, adding that even some Akali Dal workers and leaders had fallen prey to such propaganda.
While addressing an election rally at Purana Shalla village, SAD chief Sukhbir Singh Badal said, "Captain Amarinder Singh formed the government in Punjab only by speaking lies and spreading false propaganda. They (Congress) misled voters with their lies to such a level that even Akali Dal workers and leaders fell prey to their lies".
"After coming to power, the Congress government stopped disbursing old age pension, Shagun scheme, Atta-Dal scheme etc," he claimed.
Sukhbir, who has been campaigning in the Gurdaspur parliamentary segment over the past few days in support of his party's ally, the BJP, also charged the state government of using official machinery to win the upcoming Gurdaspur Lok Sabha by-poll.
"It is not that Captain's (Amarinder Singh) party candidate is fighting by-poll. It is being fought by police and other officers. They are threatening all village sarpanch and members with jail and vigilance probe," Sukhbir said.
The Gurdaspur Lok Sabha by-poll was necessitated following the death of BJP MP Vinod Khanna in April this year.
Congress has fielded senior leader Sunil Jakhar while the BJP has given ticket to businessman Swarn Salaria for the by-poll. The AAP has fielded retired Major General Suresh Khajuria from this seat.
