Sven-Olof Svensson, a pensioner from southern Sweden was admitted to hospital on Christmas Eve after he was feeling unwell.
His sister spoke to the doctor over the phone and got the impression that her brother had passed away, 'The Local' reported.
She quickly wrote an obituary which was published in the newspaper on New Year's Eve.
However, Svensson's friend who was sent to the hospital to collect his personal items saw him alive sitting up in bed.
"According to my sister she rang up the doctors and talked about me and, as she understood it, I had died. It's clear that she was shocked," he said.
Svensson laughed off the blunder which he has taken in good spirits by welcoming a reporter from the paper for a follow-up story.
When asked how he reacted when he read his own life summed up in paper Svensson said "you don't feel much.
