A taxi-driver was shot dead while the co-driver sustained bullet injuries in Dimapur, the commercial hub of Nagaland, police said today.
The body of a taxi driver was recovered near the Dimapur Municipal Council waste disposal ground at Burma Camp area by Dimapur police yesterday.
The deceased, identified as Montu Saikia, hailing from Sibsagar in Assam, was shot dead by carjackers, police informed.
The main driver of the taxi, identified as Nisamuddin Ahmed, escaped with a gunshot wound on the neck, police said.
According to Dimapur police, three people posing as passengers hired the taxi at Sibsagar on September 19 to proceed to Borpathar, Karbi-Anglong.
But after reaching Borpathar, the accused persons hijacked the taxi and brought it to Dimapur where the driver and his co-driver were confined.
The hijackers then demanded ransom from the families of the drivers for their release, police said, adding that getting wind about the families informing police in Sibsagar, the miscreants tried to get rid of the drivers, shot them and abandoned the hijacked taxi.
One of the drivers survived and informed Dimapur police. The abandoned taxi was later recovered from a separate location at Burma Camp, police said adding that manhunt to nab the absconding culprits is in progress.
