Mubeen Ahmed, who completed a masters degree in engineering from a university in California, was fired upon in a departmental store where he was working by a man after the latter's group picked up an argument with staff, said Mubeen's maternal uncle Mohd Aslam Sultan Qasmi.
He said Mubeen sustained injuries to his lungs, liver and kidney, and currently remains admitted in an ICU of a hospital at Castro Valley near California.
Mubeen went to California to pursue his masters in engineering in February this year.
His father Mohammed Mujeeb works in a defence institute in Secunderabad and is currently residing in Hyderabad.
Mujeeb and other relatives called on Telangana Irrigation Minister T Harish Rao and Medak MP Prabhakar Reddy seeking help.
Mujeeb is awaiting his visa to travel to the US, Qasmi said.
