Ten reconstructive surgeries to regain original look

A 23-year-old MBA graduate, who suffered severe electrical burns in a freak mobile explosion incident last year, has now nearly got back his original look -- thanks to ten complex reconstructive surgeries performed by doctors at a private hospital here.
Ravi (name changed), who suffered severe burns on his face, groin and thigh area in Gwalior, was referred to the Ganga Ram hospital here where a team of doctors from the department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, carried out ten surgeries to reconstruct his facial bones and other body parts.
During the surgeries, his damaged groin, thighs and penile area had also been reconstructed.

"This is the first time in my career that I saw such severe electrical burns due to mobile phone explosion. When we first saw the patient, he had severe third degree burns on the right side of the face, groin and penile area. The burns were so extensive on the face that the facial bone was burnt. There was severe burn injury to the right eye.
"It was a challenge to salvage the remaning tissues, prevent infection and reconstruct the damaged structures to as normal as possible," said Dr Swaroop Singh Gambhir, Associate Consultant, Department of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery.

Ravi underwent the first surgery on August 5 in which various portions and bones of the face, neck, right eye and forehead were reconstrued.
Ravi has undergone ten surgeries over the last eight months.
"With these surgeries, we have managed to cover the facial bones and give him near normal skin. Along with this, his groin, thighs and penile area have also been reconstructed," said Dr Gambhir.
