The ancient Lord Amirthakadeswara temple at Thirukkadaiyur in this district got a new elephant from Assam today.
The new elephant christened as 'Abirami' arrived at the temple to a rousing reception.
The 11-year-old elephant was decorated with flowers and temple priests performed Ganapathi Homam. Gaja Pooja was also performed to mark the arrival of the new elephant.
A large number of devotees had thronged to witness the poojas and to have a glimpse of the new elephant.
The elephant which had been adorning this temple for about 26 years died two years ago after a brief illness.
