Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O Panneerselvam today handed over a cheque of Rs 12 lakh to Indhu Rebecca Varghese, widow of Major Mukund Varadharajan and a recipient of country's highest military award Ashok Chakra.
He was killed in an anti-terror operation with terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir last year.
Mukund, hailing from Tamil Nadu, joined the 22 Rajput after training at the Officers' Training Academy here. He had been deployed with the 44 Rashtriya Rifles for counter-insurgency operations in Shopian area in Jammu and Kashmir when he was killed on April 25, 2014.
President Pranab Mukherjee presented Ashok Chakra to Indhu Rebecca Varghese last month, for Major Mukund Varadarajan's show of courage during the operation in Jammu and Kashmir.
Last year, former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa in her letter to Indhu Rebecca Varghese called the young officer "a brave son" and "courageous soldier."
As part of honouring those recipients of Ashok Chakra, Tamil Nadu Government announced that it would present a cheque of Rs 12 lakh to late Major Mukund Varadarajan.
O Panneerselvam presented the cheque to Rebecca Varghese who was flanked by the parents of Varadharajan at the Secretariat, an official release said.
