With water levels in the city's reservoirs depleting, Tamil Nadu government today sought Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu's intervention in releasing 2 tmcft from Kandaleru reservoir to meet the city's drinking water needs.
"As summer is fast approaching and the levels in the Chennai reservoirs have depleted, I request you to order the release of water from Kandaleru immediately so that at least two tmcft of water is realised at zero point in Tamil Nadu," Chief Minister O Panneerselvam told Naidu in a letter.
During the 43rd Liaison Committee meeting, Andhra Pradesh had agreed to Tamil Nadu's request for supply of 3 tmcft during February and March, but only 1.34 tmcft of water has been realised at Tamil Nadu border up to March 21, he said.
Since then, there had been no realisation of water at the Tamil Nadu border, the Chief Minister said while pointing out that as against its stipulated quantity of 4 tmcft to be supplied to Tamil Nadu from January to April, 2015, his state has realised only 1.74 tmcft from January to March 21.
He requested Naidu to instruct the officials concerned to ensure immediate release of water from Kandaleru so that at least 2 tmcft was realised at the Tamil Nadu border in April this year, Panneerselvam said.
