Thermal Powertech Corp Ltd (TPCIL) said that it has synchronised second 660-MW unit of its coal-fired power plant in Krishnapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.

"TPCIL, which owns and operates a 1,320-megawatt coal-fired power plant in Krishnapatnam, successfully synchronised the second 660-megawatt unit of its plant to the grid," the company said in a statement.

With this synchronisation, the plant is expected to commence full commercial operation by next month, taking the total operational capacity to 1,320 megawatts.

The first 660-MW unit of the plant began commercial operation in February 2015.

"The synchronisation of our second unit is a significant milestone and brings us another step closer to the full completion of our power plant, which is expected to be in Q3 2015. With this, the plant will be fully operational with gross generation capacity of 1,320 megawatts," TPCIL CEO Atul Nargund said.

With a total investment cost of approximately USD 1.5 billion, the power plant utilises supercritical technology, which allows enhanced efficiency and reduced emissions compared to other conventional coal-fired power plants.

TPCIL is 67.4 per cent owned by Sembcorp Utilities, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sembcorp Industries, and 32.6 per cent owned by Gayatri Energy Ventures, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Gayatri Projects.
