Markets across Odisha on Friday wore a deserted look as most of the business establishments remained closed in response to a one-day bandh call given by the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT).
The CAIT has been protesting the decision of the Union Cabinet to allow 51 per cent Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in multi-brand retail. It was also against the US retail giant Walmart's acquisition of Flipkart for $16 billion.
Around 20 lakh trading establishments downed shutters in the state in support of the CAIT call, said president of Odisha Byabasayee Sangh, Sudhakar Panda.
He said almost all shops remained closed.
The Malgodown in Cuttack and all godowns in the state remained closed for the day. During the bandh, there will be no loading and unloading of consumer goods. We have urged the central government to reconsider its decision," Panda said.
He said the Centre will be responsible if the traders intensify their agitation in the future.
Odisha'a Food Supply and Consumer Welfare Minister S N Patro, however, said that the bandh will have no impact on consumers and there will be no escalation in prices as there is enough stock of essential items for 15-20 days.
