Traffic police to videograph challaning, enforcement drives

In the wake of the horrific incident of a policeman hitting a woman with a brick, Delhi Traffic Police has decided to videograph all challaning and other enforcement drives.
The move comes after the traffic policeman hit the woman in full public view in the heart of the national capital.
The Traffic Police has also issued directions that challaning and prosecution exercises are carried out in groups to avoid one on one confrontation.
As a long-term plan, police will focus on inculcating traffic discipline through education and awareness program.
"We are going to work on a new strategy under which all challaning and prosecution will be videographed either through body-mounted or handheld cameras. We may even use cell phones to record it so that we have evidence.

"Other than that, we would carry out these enforcement exercise in groups so that in case of a confrontation one can call the PCR, other can video record it and so on," said Special Commissioner (Traffic) Muktesh Chander.

"We will concentrate on serious offences like drunk driving, over speeding etc and switch to camera-based automatic prosecution where photos of traffic violators will be taken and challan sent on their addresses. This will not only increase transparency but also productivity, he added.
Delhi Police is under attack from various quarters after Head Constable Satish Chandra had hit the woman with a brick after a minor altercation in Golf Link area on Monday.

A video clip of the incident had gone viral on internet. The constable was later arrested and dismissed from service.
