As judges have to confront with various sensitive and complex cases, there is a need to provide training for them at all levels, Chief Justice of India T S Thakur said today.

Inaugurating the Regional Centre of Tamil Nadu Judicial Academy here, he said, "As judges have to confront with various sensitive and complex cases, there was need to provide training for them at all levels. The burden of judges has increased with greater complexity of cases."

Noting that new laws were being introduced and new areas of crime were emerging, he said, "This has resulted in the need for judges of both Supreme Court and High Courts to undergo training."

The CJI said process was on to frame the syllabus for training, for which a council would be constituted.

Referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's statement in December last that he would be happy if the government could repeal one archaic law per day, Thakur said at least 1,700 laws have to be repealed.

However, he said "some laws have to be revoked, as they had become obsolete and formulating new laws was also important".
