Rich tributes were paid to former Bihar Chief Minister Mahamaya Prasad Sinha on his anniversary today.

Born in 1909, Mahamaya Prasad Sinha served as the fifth Chief Minister of Bihar from March 1967 to January 1968 which was the first non Congress government in the state.

He died in 1987.

Addressing a function Akhil Bharatiya Kayastha Mahasabha national working president Rajib Ranjan Prasad, who is also JD(U) Bihar spokesman, said "Mahamaya babu was immensely popular among the weaker sections of the society. Taking inspiration from his life we have decided to launch a movement to apprise the community of its progressive past".

"As part of our drive, we will be campaigning against consumption of alcohol, dowry and child marriage which is also in line with the policies of the Nitish Kumar government. We would solicit support of extremely backward classes, dalits and the minorities, which is essential to build a just and secular society which our ancestors like Mahamaya babu dreamed of", Prasad said.

The Praja Socialist Party leader had made a sensational political debut in 1957 assembly polls when he defeated the then state home minister Mahesh Prasad Sinha.

Speaking on the occasion, former Chairperson of Bihar SC/ST Commission Vidyanand Vikal and national president of Pichhda Varg Mahasangh (confederation of backward classes) Rajendra Yadav hailed the role of Kayastha community in championing the cause of the weaker sections of the society.
