Two BSNL officials sentenced to 2-yrs jail term for graft

A special CBI court in Assam has convicted has two officials of BSNL and a contractor for graft and sentenced them to undergo two years jail term.
Navendra Kumar and M L Sharma of BSNL, Guwahati and Raj Kumar Das, a contractor, have been sentenced by the court in Guwahati to two years rigorous imprisonment with fine of Rs 10,000 for criminal conspiracy, cheating and under the provisions of Prevention of Corruption Act, CBI spokesperson Kanchan Prasad said here today.
She said the case was registered on July 31, 2001 and on completion of investigation, CBI filed a charge sheet on November 25, 2004.
CBI said that the accused cheated the Department of Telecom (now BSNL) by claiming different nature of soil and RCC protection and also submitting bogus and fabricated bills to the tune of Rs 1.41 lakhs in the matter of optical fibre cable trenching and laying works between 1995 and 1998.
"In another case, the Special Judge, CBI, Guwahati, has convicted M L Sharma...And Mrinmoy Bhuyan, then JTO, OFC, DOT, Dimapur, and sentenced them to undergo two years rigorous imprisonment with fine of Rs. 10,000...," she said.
The spokesperson said the case was registered on July 31, 2001.
She said CBI filed the charge sheet on November 25, 2004 against both the persons charging them with cheating the Department of Telecom (now BSNL) by submitting fabricated bills to the tune of Rs. 28.81 lakhs.
