Former Pakistan Test batsman and current national selector Wajahatullah Wasti has been released on bail after spending time in jail for assaulting his step brother.
Wasti, who played six Tests and 15 ODIs, was released today after spending four days in the central prison of his hometown, Peshawar in Khyber Pakhtunkhawa province.
"After a fight with his step brother Wasti had obtained a pre-arrest bail until October 17. But the judicial magistrate didn't extend their bails and instead sent them to prison," the police officer handling the case told PTI on telephone.
"But on Monday the higher court granted him and his brother Akhtar Sarfraz bail and they were released from prison," Najeebullah Anjum said.
He said the fight took place over a domestic dispute in which the step brother Rafatullah sustained injuries and had to be sent to hospital.
Wasti is presently also a member of the six-member national selection committee headed by Moin Khan.
In his brief Test career, Wasti scored twin centuries in a Test against Sri Lanka at Lahore in March, 1999 and was also a member of the Pakistan team which reached the final of the 1999 World Cup scoring 84 in the semi-final against New Zealand.
