Two Delhi Police sub-inspectors were today suspended for allegedly misbehaving with two North East students of Delhi University after they were found travelling without tickets in a DTC bus, police said.
The incident took place when the two students were on their way to Satyawati college in Ashok Vihar area of North West Delhi.
North-East Forum for International Solidarity (NEFIS), of which the two students are members, has alleged that the two sub-inspectors of Bharatnagar police station intervened when the victims were talking to the ticket-checker and tried to intimidate them.
"When the students resisted the policemen's intimidation tactics and argued back, they were picked up and taken to Bharatnagar police station. The two sub-inspectors not only thrashed them but also passed several racist comments on the physical features of the students," alleged Thanglunmang Khongsai, a NEFIS member.
In response to the allegations, police said the complaint has been taken note of and top officials have suspended the two sub-inspectors - Laxmi Chand and Punit.
"The two DU students had complained against the two SIs of physical assault and misconduct. Taking note of their complaint, the accused cops have been suspended," a police official said.
Angered by the incident, Khongsai said NEFIS has decided to approach other student and youth organisations and North-East groups, and to file a complaint with the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).
"The two policemen's behaviour was coloured by extremely racist comments and views and it is clear that students, particularly from the North-East are easy victims of high-handed, insensitive and intimidating police tactics.
"NEFIS members have decided that such an act of authoritarian behaviour is unbecoming of policemen and should be resisted," he said.
