Two persons were injured in an altercation over a road dispute in the communally sensitive Gomtipur area here Sunday, police said.
Five persons were arrested following the incident.
The trouble began after an auto rickshaw narrowly missed hitting a woman when she was crossing the road after stepping out of her car, police said.
The woman slapped the rickshaw driver and her two relatives who were travelling with her beat him up, said inspector C P Tandel of Gomtipur police station.
A group of men from the area, belonging to the minority community, came to the rickshaw driver's help and thrashed the two men, causing the duo injuries, the police officer said.
Former BJP MLA from the area Jitu Vaghela reached the spot following the incident.
He later alleged that when he asked traffic police to regulate the increasingly chaotic traffic in the area, a police constable abused him.
A group of locals led by Vaghela then protested outside Gomtipur police station and sought action against the constable.
"Around 11 am, a large group of people attacked a woman and beat up two others. I was called to intervene. I asked the police to take action to control the traffic and the encroachment in the area, but a traffic constable abused me," Vaghela later told reporters.
Police have registered a case of rioting and assault under the IPC against six men and arrested five of them, inspector Tandel said.
