The deceased was identified as Chandra Polai (40) of Pakalapalli village. He is also the husband of Babita Polai, the ruling BJD councillor in Aska Notified Aarea Councillor (NAC).
Police said at least two persons had boarded a Berhampur bound bus at Khadabhaga in which Polai was also travelling. After some time, they came near to him and fired in the close range and got down from the bus and fled.
Polai was rushed to the community health centre (CHC) at Aska and then shifted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital, here where he succumbed his injuries, police said
Police ruled out political enmity as the reason behind the killing of Polai.
