An under-trial prisoner (UTP) Thursday escaped from the sub-jail at Kodala in Ganjam district, about 40-km from here, officials said.
The escaped UTP was identified as Santosh Behera of Hundata village. He was arrested in a robbery case and was lodged in the sub jail since September 1 this year, sources said.
"The accused escaped by assaulting the warden on duty. Before escaping, he had meet two of his relatives," said jail superintendent-cum jailor RK Sahu.
"We have registered a case as per the report of the superintendent of sub jail and started inquiry," said inspector-in-charge, Kodala police station Sushant Kumar Sethi.
The sub-jail at Kodala houses over 140 prisoners, sources said.
"We will order an inquiry into the incident soon," said senior superintendent, circle jail, Berhampur BB Patnaik.
