Terming as "outrageous" claims made by former army chief V K Singh including the one that senior politicians in Jammu and Kashmir were given money by army, CPI said his remarks had sullied the image of the force.
The party also said that the timing of General (Retd) V K Singh's joining the BJP was aimed at "seeking political shelter and to pre-empt government's moves against him."
"Singh has been making outrageous remarks, one after the other... By making such statements, he has sullied the image of the army and raised questions about several issues related to national security," CPI National Secretary D Raja said.
This, he said, "is not acceptable from a person who has held the highest position in the Army".
Referring to the BJP's defence of Singh who recently shared political platform with Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, Raja said, "The timing of his joining hands with BJP is meant to pre-empt the government's moves against him over his statements. It is to take political shelter."
He also accused the former army chief of "exposing army functions in a sensitive state like Jammu and Kashmir and his allegations regarding how the army spends money. All this needs to be investigated. If there is a leak, the leak has to be probed."
Observing that the army has never interfered in civilian affairs, Raja said, "How Singh says it has. Such statements coming from a person like him is completely unacceptable.
