Union Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Venkaiah Naidu today criticised the Congress, for the present stalemate over Mayadayi river water dispute.
"In 2002 and 2006, the Congress government in Goa moved the court, creating hurdles for solving the water dispute between three states.
"In 2007, Congress made a big issue. Sonia Gandhiji during the Goa election categorically said that her party was committed not to allow river water diversion," he told reporters here.
The then Congress government, in December 2008, also approved the union cabinet proposal for setting up of the tribunal to solve the dispute, Naidu said.
"You (Congress) go to the court; you make it an election issue; you pass cabinet resolution for setting up tribunal ... There is nothing wrong in seeking Prime Minister's help but blaming Prime Minister for it is unfair and is nothing but playing politics," he stated.
Naidu also questioned the moral rights of the Congress to blame Prime Minister Narendra Modi for not resolving the issue by saying "why didn't Congress leaders urge the then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to solve the issue, when their government ruled at the Centre from 2004 to 2014".
"I know it was not that much easy to solve the issue. If it was not easy then, it is not that much easy now," he added.
Naidu also urged Chief Minister Siddaramaiah not to play politics over the issue and convince Congress counterparts in Goa and Maharashtra, before convening the meeting of chief ministers of the three states.
