Superintendent of Police Vivek Kumar said a Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) jawan allegedly tried to molest a girl student when she was returning to her house at Nandawa village from Bairgania yesterday.
The locals yesterday held demonstration against the incident but the matter was settled following intervention by local administration.
To protest the incident, locals today called a Bairgania bandh and angry villagers clashed with the SSB personnel when they went to the SSB Camp for holding demonstration.
A SSB jawan opened fire leading to the clash and angry locals started pelting stones, Kumar said adding later the jawans left the tent and allegedly opened fire in which one Niraj Paswan was killed on the spot and more than one dozen people were injured.
Senior police officials, including IGP (Tirhut zone) Gupteshwar Pandey were camping on the spot, he said.
Meanwhile, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar directed DGP Abhayanand to taken necessary action in this connection and keep close watch on the situation prevailing in the area.
"We are maintaining close watch on the situation and DGP has to take necessary action," Kumar told reporters.
"We will take necessary action and guilty will not not spared," he said.
