WCCB asks police to take stern action against peacock poachers

Expressing concern over the killing of peacocks in the state, the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau has asked police to take stern action against the poachers.
Increased poaching of peacock for feather is posing a serious threat to the national bird in the region, Special Officer of the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau, Babu Lal Jaju said.
"About 10 peacocks are being killed in the state every day but determination, on the part of the forest department and police to deal with these cases, is completely missing," Jaju said.
He said Bundi district tops the list, as 200 peacocks have been killed there in past one year.

Jaju said "We have appealed the police to identify the killers and bring them to the book so that a message could be disseminated among the poachers that now they could not escape the law."
On April 3, seven peacocks were killed in Topa village of Tonk district. With this the district has reported about 70 killings of peacocks in past one year, sources said.

Similarly, 92 peacock killings were reported in Bhilwara district in past one year. Recently, 26 peacocks were killed in Shahpura, they said.
90 per cent peacock killings were carried out by using poison laced grains, forest department officials said.

Peacock is protected under schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act (1972), which has provisions for the poachers amounting to 7 years imprisonment and fine of Rs 5 lakh.
