A 16-year-old white tigress at the Kamala Nehru Zoo here, passed away today due to multiple-organ failure, official said
Barely, 10 days ago, another white tigress, 5-year-old Diya, from the zoo, had died of intestinal cancer on July 11.
The white tigress -- Sita, died of multiple-organ failure. Her condition had deteriorated after she had abandoned taking food since last couple of days. The big cat didn't respond to the medical treatment due to old age, Zoo In-charge Uttam Yadav told PTI.
She was the first white feline in the zoo.
He said that the life span of a tiger is 16 to 24 in Indian zoos.
Yadav said Sita was brought here from Aurangabad in Maharashtra in 2004 and after her arrival the population of tigers had increased.
Meanwhile, expressing concern over the deaths of two rare white tigresses of the zoo in quick succession, environmentalist Ajay Dubey alleged that wildlife health management was in "shambles" in Madhya Pradesh, especially in Indore.
He demanded that the Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) should immediately handover the management of the Kamla Nehru Zoo to the state forest department as it has "failed" to administer it properly.
"I along with wildlife activists have decided to write to the Central Zoo Authority (CZA) in this regard, shortly," he added.
