A 40-year-old woman was mauled to death by a wild bear in Anantnag district of south Kashmir, police said today.
The victim, Zaina Begum, was attacked by a black bear outside her residence at village Ahalan-Gadool in Kokernag area, 80 km from here, last evening, a police spokesman said.
He said the bear had ventured into the village from a nearby forest and was chased back by villagers, who came out on hearing the cries of the victim.
Begum, critically-injured, was brought to Soura Medical Institute for treatment but succumbed to her injuries yesterday, the spokesman said.
