A group of youths, who were disengaged after serving under National Youth Corps (NYC) scheme, today went on hunger strike here demanding implementation of the previous government's decision to resume their services.
"We are forced to sit on hunger strike as the present dispensation is not implementing the previous government's decision with regard to continuation of our services," All Jammu and Kashmir National Youth Corps Association president A A Bhat said.
Claiming to represent 6,000 youths who served under NYC scheme, Bhat said, "Our future is insecure even as the previous government in its Cabinet order on October 22, 2014 assured continuation of our services."
The National Youth Corps (NYC) scheme was launched in 2010, to enable youths of the age group 18-25 years, to serve up to two years in nation-building activities, for which they are paid suitable honorarium.
He said that they were engaged in 2010 under the NYC scheme, but did not get extension permit after 2012.
"We approached the then government which on October 22, 2014, it passed a Cabinet order directing continuation of our services against the vacancies created due to upgradation of 800 schools across the state," he said.
"We put forth our demands to the government but so far nothing happened forcing us to go for hunger strike," he said, and threatened to continue the strike till the Jammu and Kashmir government comes forward and address their grievances.
