'Edible Oils Production Needs To Be Raised'

Although trading on the Calcutta Stock Exchange (CSE) was largely dull yesterday, software stocks remained firm on good buying support and pushed the CSE-40 index up by 17.93 points to close the day at 2,190.13 points as compared with Friday's closing of 2,172.20 points. The highest and lowest of the day were 2194.12 points and 2175 points, respectively. The turnover was moderate and undertone steady.

Investor activity in pivotals, pharma and FMCG counters was cautious with hardly any fluctuation witnessed. However, Hind Lever was an exception and the scrip shot up to Rs 2352.10 on renewed enquiry.

Listless dealings marked trading and this reflected general caution to make fresh commitments because of the Kashmir situation, said CSE dealers.

Pentafour Software and Satyam Computer counters witnessed hectic trading. Pentafour opened at Rs 1,099 and touched a high of Rs 1,145. The stock declined to Rs 1,099, but climbed again to close at Rs 1,131.

Satyam Computer opened at Rs 1,236, touched an intra-day high of Rs 1,283.80 and dipped to Rs 1,236. It finally recovered to close the day at Rs 1,263.30.

The State Bank of India stock closed the day at Rs 236 after opening at Rs 238. The stock touched a high of Rs 241 and a low of Rs 231.50. ITC opened the day at Rs 1,074 and climbed to a high of Rs 1,085.30. However, the stock declined to a low of Rs 1,073 and climbed again to close the day at Rs 1,081.

Larsen and Toubro (L&T), which opened the day at Rs 293 eventually dipped to close at Rs 287.70. The stock hit a high of Rs 294.40 during trading but declined again to a low of Rs 285.60.
