This refers to your report 'Parliamentary panel flays government move to close NTC Mills' (August 13). It is a truism that NTC mills are destined to be shut down today or tomorrow.

The government in the name of many things nationalised these NTC Mills. The undeclared purpose of taking over these units was to help certain political parties. And the government never felt the need to implement the basic solution to revive the sick units.

Take care programme for the old industry should have continued but, at the same time, not by spending too much on its so-called modernisation. It would have been a wise decision to have a full fledged young or new unit of modern product in its surplus land to help the old unit financially to enable young and old to survive mutually.

Instead the government exercised its powers, imposed heavy taxes on masses to get more revenue to finance these sick units and asked banks and financial institutions to finance these loosing units. And thus got forced to help these financial institutions for their losses through various methods which resulted in more poverty for the want of funds, for social welfare programme of the masses.

Thus most of the resources got busy in helping these few lakhs of employees of these public sector. And these nationalised units became like a disabled child, whom the parents neither want to desert nor can maintain.
