West Bengal Governor R N Ravi dissolved the West Bengal Legislative Assembly with effect from May 7, bringing the curtains down on Trinamool Congress' 15-year rule in the state.

The term of the Assembly was set to be over by May 7. In the recently-held Assembly elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won a resounding majority with 207 seats to its credit, and easily beating the ruling TMC. However, outgoing chief minister Mamata Banerjee has refused to resign, alleging the election has been 'stolen' by the BJP in connivance with the Election Commission of India.
