In the recent past, films that had a huge budgets, big star cast and big directors have bombed at the box office, whereas films like "Bheja Fry", "Iqbal", "Khosla ka Ghosla" and "Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd." did extremely well even without a popular star cast and with limited budgets.
"If we look at these films, we find they are usually much better conceptualised than big budget films. Filmmakers have to accept the idea that without a tight script, a big star cast and beautiful locations cannot draw in the crowds," says Prabhakar Shukla, who directed 'Kahani Gudiya Ki.'
If we look at the figures, we can certainly draw a conclusion about the success ratio of these movies among the audience, where great stories with gripping presentation, clicked the most.
According to estimates controversial film "Black Friday", directed by Anurag Kashyap, earned collections between 8 to 9 crores, while its cost was Rs 6.5 crores and Sriram Raghavan directed "Johnny Gaddar" earned collections between Rs 4 to 4.5 crores and was made at the cost of Rs 2 to 2.5 crores.
Given the success rate of these kind of movies, Aaamir Khan was once quoted as saying, "With the popularity of these small budget films on the rise, I would also like to do films of such different approach."
