Defence sector PSU Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) and the Indian Institute of Science have signed a Memorandum of Understanding for instituting a Chair Professorship for Radar Studies at the IISc. BEL has contributed Rs one crore as corpus fund for setting up the chair, a BEL release said.

Ashwani Kumar Datt, chairman and managing director of BEL, handed over the cheque for Rs one crore to Prof P Balaram, Director, IISc, at a ceremony held at the Institute today. I V Sarma, Director (R&D), BEL, and B K Subburaman, Registrar, IISc, signed the MoU for the Chair.

The establishment of a Radar Chair at IISc will create a platform for advanced studies in the area of Radars, paving the way for technological collaboration between BEL engineers and IISc scientists for mutual benefit. The Chair will provide BEL with academic, scientific and technological inputs besides the technical manpower needed to drive futuristic Radar projects and ultimately help it realise its long-term goal of developing world-class radars.

BEL also expects that, along with IISc, it can play a vital role in the field of Radar studies. Radar is BEL’s biggest revenue earning segment and an array of new projects like Weapon Locating Radars, 2Dô3D Surveillance Radars and Fire Control Radars are presently under development in close liaison with the Electronics and Radar Development Establishment (LRDE), the release said.
