Jeep on Monday launched the third product in its line up, the Compass, aggressively pricing it at Rs 14.95 lakh, ex-showroom, Delhi. The price tag makes Compass the most affordable jeep in India. Top of the line variant of the Compass, Limited 4WD is priced at Rs 20.65 lakh. According to the company, 65 per cent localisation and GST regime has helped FCA to achieve such an aggressive price.
“Compass is a global product and not only India specific. We cannot compromise on quality. It meets all global safety standards,” said Kevyn Flynn, President and MD, FCA India. Jeep Compass comes equipped with over 50 active and passive safety features. Other than the domestic market, Jeep will export Compass to 10 other key markets including Australia, UK, South Africa and other Asia-pacific market. In India, Compass is assembled in Tata's Ranjangaon plant, the same plant where Tata assembles its yet to be launched compact SUV, Nexon. India is the fourth destination where Compass is assembled. China, Mexico and Brazil are other three.
Compass is available with two engine options, a 2.0 Liter Multijet Turbo-Diesel and a 1.4 Litre Multi-Air Petrol. The 2.0 Litre diesel produces 171 HP and 350 Nm of peak torque while the 1.4 Litre petrol churns out 160 HP and 250 Nm of peak torque. The diesel variant comes with a 6-speed manual transmission. On the other hand, petrol variant has an added option of 7-speed Dry Dual Clutch Automatic Transmission (DDCT).
The vehicle will be available in Indian market in three trims- Sport, Longitude and Top of the line Limited. While the base Sports variant is offered in all black upholstery, Longitude and Limited gets dual tone cloth and leather upholstery respectively. Other features offered in the top trim package are a 7-inch U-Connect HD touchscreen infotainment system that supports Apple car play and Android Auto; Active Drive with Select Terrain Traction Management system allowing the driver to choose from Auto, Mud, Sand & Snow modes and Frequency Sensitive Damping (FCD) that helps to optimise the vehicle's stability. Moreover, Jeep Compass will be available with three-years or 100,000 km manufacturer's warranty in addition to a Road Side Assistance package for three years.
Flynn also said that they will be targeting to expand in key markets to sell Compass. He said that they will be expanding to a total of 60 dealership outlets from 50 currently across 47 cities. Commenting on after-sales service, FCA India said that they are currently capable of supplying 96 per cent of their spare parts to the dealers for mechanical services. The company has authorised Mopar-branded workshops across 48 cities. Mopar is an 80-year old North-American after sales service brand that will manage services for Jeep brand in India.
Till date, Jeep has received over 5000 bookings for the Compass. “Analysing our pre-booking numbers we need to prioritise the diesel manual transmission variants. We will deliver petrol automatic closer to Diwali,” Flynn added. Deliveries of Compass nationwide will begin from August 6.
