Moser Baer Clean Energy Limited (MBCEL) has set up Asia’s largest solar farm having power generation capacities of 30 Mw in Banaskantha district of Gujarat and the inauguration for the project is scheduled on October 14, 2011 at the hands of Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi.
The 30-Mw solar farm, set up with an investment of Rs 465 crore has been set up using 236,000 thin film modules. The company has set up the solar power project in a record four month period and would generate nearly 50 million units per year.
The power will be evacuated through two separate 66 kilovolt (kv) lines to sub-stations at Anganwada and Dunawada.
"This project awarded under phase 1 of Gujarat Solar Power policy 2009 will be the first major project commissioned under the Gujarat Solar Mission. We see Gujarat as one of the best solar power generation destinations due to its progressive solar policies," said Ratul Puri, chairman, Moser Baer Projects Pvt Ltd (MBPPL), parent company of MBCEL.
Gujarat is the largest solar power producing state in the country with the installed capacity of 11 Mw. Besides the newly announced 30 Mw solar power capacity, MBCEL is also setting up additional 15 Mw solar power project in the state. For the additional capacities MBCEL is considering locations including Porbandar in Saurasthra.
"The solar power project set up at north Gujarat will provide daily power supply to about 50,000 houses in the state. This power project would save about 50,000 tonnes of carbon emissions in a year, making the power generation greener than the conventional coal-fired power generation," said Rajya Ghei, country head, MBCEL.
