Nike India has sued its long-time brand ambassador Virat Kohli, alleging breach of an endorsement contract.

According to sources, Nike had extended its five-year endorsement contract valid until 2013 by a year and duly intimated Kohli of this. However, the cricketer had allegedly responded to the company, saying he was "looking at other options".

Nike accused Kohli of entering into negotiations with a rival firm, while it reserved the right to extend its contract until 2014. The current contract is valid from 2008 to 2013, giving the firm a right/option to extend it within the existing contract period.

Before adjourning the case, judge Huluvadi G Ramesh of the Karnataka High Court directed Kohli to maintain status quo for the next four weeks.

Kohli's spokesperson declined comment, as the matter was sub judice. Nike didn't provide any detail on the lawsuit.

Nike has sought an injunction, prohibiting Kohli from negotiating with other brands or signing any deal while under its contract. The company also held the right to claim damages of an unlimited amount, said a source.
