Vedanta group firm Sesa Goa today said it has commissioned the third blast furnace at its pig iron plant at Goa, taking its total production capacity to 0.625 million tonne per annum.

"With this commissioning, Sesa's pig iron plant becomes the largest producer of low phosphorous pig iron in India with an installed capacity of 0.625 million tonne per annum (MTPA), which is up from the earlier capacity of 0.250 MTPA," the company said in a statement.

It added that production from the new blast furnace started on August 17 has a capacity of 450 kilo tonne per annum.

Pig iron is the intermediate product of smelting iron ore and has two major types - basic grade, which is used for steel making and foundry grade, which is used for making iron castings.

Sesa Goa has also completed the expansion of its metallurgical coke capacity from 0.28 MTPA to 0.56 MTPA and 30 MW waste heat recovery power plant.

It further said that commissioning of the associated sinter plant of 0.8 MTPA capacity is progressing and will be commissioned in the current quarter.

Shares of the company were trading at Rs 190.80 apiece on BSE in the late afternoon trade, up 1.90% from the previous close.
