VMC Systems Limited, a Hyderabad-based telecommunications and power-conversion equipment manufacturer, has set a target to produce 100,000 Ubislate 7x tablets for UK-based Datawind by August this year.
“We are currently producing 500 tablets a day, and are planning to increase the production to 4,000 tablets per day to meet the demand by working two-shifts at our plant in Hyderabad,” Murthy Suravarapu, vice-president (marketing), VMC Systems, told mediapersons here on Thursday.
VMC has received the contract from Datawind to manufacture Ubilsate 7x tablets in March 2012. It has so far manufactured 10,000 tablets, he said. Datawind owns the IP and design of the Ubislate tablets, while they will be assembled by VMC. Ubislate 7x has all the features of the low-cost Akash tablet.
VMC also has plans to start manufacturing digital set-top-boxes by the end of this year. “We are currently in discussion with two-three digital TV operators to manufacture digital set-top-boxes for them. The decision may be taken by October this year. The manufacturing will be for the domestic market,” said B Venkataramana, executive director of VMC Systems.
The company, which started its operations in 2002, has garnered $250-million (Rs 1,100 crore) turnover in the last financial year. The unit, spread across 150,000 sft, currently employs 650 people.
VMC Systems has more than 60 products across different categories, of which 13 products are exclusively designed and manufactured by the company. It has a team of 80 engineers for R&D activities.
