Call it a politician's foot in the mouth disease and it was in ample display when Olympic silver medalist P V Sindhu returned home in Hyderabad after her successful campaign at Rio. Deputy Chief Minister of Telengana Mahmood Ali announced that his government is planning to give Sindhu better coaching so that she could win a gold medal next time.

Now whether he intended to say that Sindhu's current coach Pullela Gopichand is not good enough or a slip of tongue in the excitement of promoting his government's support for sports and good talent, Mahmood's comment was not well received by twitteratis.

Hopefully, Mahmood may only get wiser. And if this public lashing was not enough, he should probably check Gopichand's own track record as a player and the excellent work he is doing at the academy which has produced two Olympic medallists.

2012 Olympic bronze medallist Saina Nehwal was also spotted and trained by Gopichand before she became India's most visible and famous non-cricket sports player.

The likes of Sania and Sindhu will be best served if the government can find ways to invest in facilities and coaches who can spot talent early rather than building on someone else's hard work and efforts.
