The Tata group founder, Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata, considered the father of modern industry in India, would become the first business leader to have a commemorative coin.
The government will unveil the coin this week to mark his 175th birth anniversary, said a government official. Tata was born on March 3, 1839, in Navsari, Gujarat. The government has, so far, issued commemorative coins to honour political & religious leaders, scientists, social workers and to mark important events and institutions.
According to the Coinage Act, 2011, a commemorative coin is one stamped by the empowered authority to mark an occasion or event and expressed in Indian currency. The Delhi High Court had in December last year questioned the government's move to issue coins with pictures of deities.
