Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat’s statements angered Congress leaders. He had said on Sunday, "Hindustan is a Hindu nation. Hindutva is the identity of our nation and it can absorb others in itself.”

Digvijaya Singh tweeted: "I thought we had one Hitler (Narendra Modi) in the making but it seems we have two. God save India. A question to Bhagwat: Is Hindutva a religious identity? What is its relationship with Sanatan Dharma?”

Congress spokesperson and former Union minister Anand Sharma said equating Hinduism to Hindutva was belittling the richness of the former. "This confirms the Bharatiya Janata Party and the RSS speak with forked tongues and lack sincerity and conviction towards what Prime Minister Narendra Modi said from the ramparts of the Red Fort.

"The RSS does not have a proprietary right over Hindus or their faith, which is tolerant and all-embracing.”
