DATA STORY: India's active cases now under 900,000, down 12.12% from Sep 18 peak

India on Friday reported yet another net reduction in its count of active coronavirus cases to bring the total to a level below the 900,000 mark. At 893,592, the tally is down 12.12% from the September 18 peak of 1,017,754 and the lowest level since September 7.
 
While 78,365 new coronavirus recoveries took the total number of cured cases to 5,906,069, an overall addition 70,496 to the total number of infections pushed the country’s tally to 6,906,151. Meanwhile, with 964 Covid-19 fatalities in a day, India’s death toll reached 106,490.
 
The second-most-affected country by active and total cases, and third by fatality, India has added 512,083 in the past seven days. Here are the key takeaways from the coronavirus data released by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) on Friday (October 9, 2020):

 

• With a daily increase of 70,496 in total cases, India’s tally of coronavirus cases has risen from 6,835,655 on Thursday to 6,906,151 – an increase of 1%. Death toll has reached 106,490, with 964 fatalities in a day. The second-most-affected country by total cases and active cases, and third by death toll, India has added 512,083 cases in the past 7 days alone.
• India now accounts for 11.15% of all active cases globally (one in every 8 active cases), and 9.98% of all deaths (one in every 10).
• Backwards from here, the last 1 million cases for India have come in 13 days.
• The count of active cases across India has seen a net reduction of 8833, compared with 5458 on Thursday. The states that have reported the biggest 24-hour jump in active cases are Karnataka (990), Chhattisgarh (650), West Bengal (493), Bihar (121), and Manipur (72).
• With 78365 new daily recoveries, India’s recovery rate has improved to 85.52%; the fatality rate remains unchanged at 1.54%.
• India’s new daily closed cases stand at 79,329 — 964 deaths and 78365 recoveries. The share of deaths in total closed cases stands at 1.22%.
• India’s 5-day moving average of daily rate of addition to total cases stands at 1.1%.
• India’s doubling time for total cases stands at 67.6 days, and for deaths at 76.2 days.
• The only state that has seen its highest single-day jump in daily new cases today is West Bengal (3526).
• Overall, five states with the biggest 24-hour jump in total cases are Maharashtra (13395), Karnataka (10704), Kerala (5445), Andhra Pradesh (5292), and Tamil Nadu (5088).
• Among states with more than 25,000 cases, the five with worst recovery rates at present are Kerala (64.62%), Chhattisgarh (78.76%), Maharashtra (81.13%), Karnataka (81.33%), and Assam (83.51%).
• India on Thursday conducted 1,168,705 coronavirus tests, and had a test positivity rate of 6.0%.
• Five states with the highest test positivity rate (TPR) – percentage of tested people turning out to be positive for Covid-19 infection (by cumulative data for tests and cases) – are Maharashtra (20.18%), Chandigarh (15.35%), Goa (13.88%), Puducherry (13.57%), and Karnataka (12.07%).
• Five states with the highest TPR by daily numbers for tests and cases added – are Goa (30.79%), Sikkim (23.08%), Maharashtra (16.73%), Chandigarh (13.53%), and Tripura (10.83%).
• Among states and UTs with more than 10 million population, five that have carried out the highest number of tests (per million population) are Delhi (175421), J&K (134859), Andhra Pradesh (121598), Assam (109979), and Tamil Nadu (106274).
• The five most affected states by total cases are Maharashtra (1493884), Andhra Pradesh (739719), Karnataka (679356), Tamil Nadu (640943), and Uttar Pradesh (427459).
• Maharashtra, the most affected state overall, has reported a net addition of 13,395 cases. The state has added 142731 cases in the past 10 days.
• Andhra Pradesh, the second-most-affected state by total cases, has added 39,484 cases in the past seven days alone. On Friday it added 5292 cases.
• Tamil Nadu, which has seen its tally going up by 5,088, has added more than 5,000 cases on each of the past 79 days.
• Karnataka has reported 10704 cases, to take its tally to 679356.
• Delhi has added 2726 cases to take its tally to 300833.
